About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Toronto’s vibrant Little Portugal neighborhood, Bar Mordecai offers an inviting blend of sophisticated lounge vibes paired with an imaginative culinary flair. This restaurant crafts a truly distinctive dining experience, weaving together flavors that excite the palate and an atmosphere that feels both intimate and energizing.

Bar Mordecai’s menu is a celebration of bold, fresh ingredients and creative combinations. Start your culinary journey with their remarkable Seabream Ceviche served alongside crisp plantain chips, which balances bright citrus notes with subtle spice, delivering an invigorating burst of flavor. The Burrata with grilled grapes is another standout—a luscious, creamy cheese juxtaposed with the smoky sweetness of caramelized fruit and a drizzle of pomegranate molasses that dances on the tongue.

For those who crave indulgence, the Oysters—priced per piece and accompanied by daily accompaniments—are a luxurious treat, briny and fresh, perfect for savoring slowly in good company. The kitchen’s Tuna Tartare and Patatas Bravas offer a playful mix of textures and heat, while dishes like the Green Curry Salmon bring fragrant spice and richness into the spotlight.

Dessert lovers will find the menu’s Soft-Serve Ice Cream enticingly creative, with cocktail-inspired flavors like the Strawberry Elderflower Margarita and Pina Colada soft-serve elevating sweet cravings with refined adult notes. The classic Pumpkin Pie rounds out the meal with comforting warmth and spice, perfect for a seasonally inspired finale.

The beverage program matches the kitchen’s imagination with craft cocktails like the show-stopping Final Boss and the timelessly stylish Dirty Martini, expertly mixed and served with flair. Guests consistently highlight the attentive and knowledgeable staff, who elevate the experience by thoughtfully suggesting pairings and patiently sharing insights—making every visit feel personalized and special.

Set across multiple levels, Bar Mordecai offers distinct ambiances: the downstairs pulses with club energy and lively beats, while upstairs, the lighting is dim and warmly hued in rich reds, creating a cozy, lounge-like setting where conversation flows freely. While some patrons note the deep red lighting challenges photography, it undeniably casts a seductive glow that enhances the intimate vibe. On weekends, the space morphs organically from a relaxed lounge to a lively hotspot, perfect for celebrating with friends or marking special occasions. Indeed, many have shared glowing memories of birthdays and group nights out, especially praising the seamless karaoke experience and friendly hospitality, even when technical hiccups arise.

Whether you’re drawn by the innovative dishes, the craft cocktails, or the dynamic yet approachable atmosphere, Bar Mordecai stands out as a Toronto gem. It’s a place where culinary creativity and warm service meet in a setting that’s equal parts unexpected and inviting—perfect for anyone looking to savor sophisticated flavors in a setting that feels like a secret haven.

Very cute bar. Came here for a night cap and the vibe was dimly lit, warm with nice vibes. I remember downstairs being a loud club but upstairs you could talk and sit and order drinks and food. The servers were pretty attentive considering what Ive experienced in Toronto but we had a good time. I would come back and recommend.

Atmosphere: 5.5/10 Set in Toronto’s Little Portugal neighborhood, Bar Mordecai leans more lounge than cocktail bar. Heavy red lighting dominates the space, making it tough for photos. The Wes Anderson-inspired theme doesn’t quite translate—there’s a mismatch between the concept and the actual design. As the night progresses, especially on weekends, the music gets louder and the vibe turns more clubby with DJs in rotation. Spatial layout feels underused and conversation gets harder later in the evening. Drinks: 5/10 Recommendation: – The small menu includes a few drinks on tap, with alcohol content listed. While the concepts show some creativity, flavors lean basic and lack balance. Presentation is minimal—garnish comes in the form of custom ice cubes only. Average glassware, but nice coasters. Overall, the drinks feel a notch below Toronto’s usual bar standards. Service: 7.5/10 Friendly team, but not not very clear in the roles of the staff. Water served on arrival. Prices are below average for the city. That said, the team could have been a bit more attentive.

Had my birthday there on Friday and what an experience! Me and my friends all work in the industry and to have our server patiently taking his time with us and explaining everything about their espresso martini was the highlight of our night. If you are looking for nice food, drinks, ambiance and service this is the place! We were all so happy and I had one of my nicest birthdays there, will be back!

We went to Bar Mordecai for karaoke with a group of 12 to celebrate my birthday, and it was such a great experience! The space was super fun for a group night out (we had the large karaoke room called Vegas). There was a technical issue with the karaoke system at the beginning, but the staff handled it so well, they were quick to troubleshoot, and one of the owners even came in personally to help get it sorted. Our server was also amazing.. friendly, patient, and made sure we had everything we needed all night. Once the system was back up, we had an absolute blast. Huge thanks to the team at Bar Mordecai for turning what could’ve been a hiccup into such a memorable birthday celebration!

What a great spot in Toronto. Loved the food and ambiance the DJ, the service and the drinks!! Don't forget to try their cocktail soft serve. It was one of the best. We lost count at how many $10 delicious spritzes we had. Only before 10pm. Will definitely be back and check out their karaoke rooms too.

Great place to hang out with the girlies. Affordable cocktail drinks which are very unique. I just wish they would lessen the ice on some of the drinks they offer. The bar is very pretty too but it’s a bit dark inside which I believe is the mood they are going for with the candles they have around. I’ll likely come back to try other things on the menu.
